Michelle Barry

My name is Michelle Barry (she/her).

I am a music producer, sound engineer, educator and synth geek based on Gadigal country (Sydney, Australia).

I offer a supportive and inclusive environment for solo singer songwriters, independent artists and LGBTQI+ friends.  In consultation with my clients I create affordable, reliable and total sound solutions for all productions. My local and international experience supports established and emerging artists professionally develop their creative visions.

My passion led me to a career in music and audio.  After years of listening, hearing new songs and stories still motivates and excites me.   I look forward to hearing yours!

  • I have worked as a professional audio engineer and producer for over 20 years. Starting out at Paradise Studio, Sydney in 1990. Paradise was an old style analogue studio that specialised in indie and jazz recording. At Paradise I was fortunate to work on many great tracks, highlights include Underground Lovers session, Jazz ensemble for the managing label RooArt and assisting international producers Lee Ranaldo, Sean Slade and Paul Kolderie

In 1993 I worked for Trackdown Studio more album work followed, some fun animation sound and learning the emerging digital technology in Sydney. In 1996, I moved to London and became a house engineer at Marcus Studios. Marcus Studios produced a mixture of established UK artists and pop. Memorable sessions include: Carleen Anderson and Chart topping Billie Piper

Back in Sydney in 1999 freelancing I continued working on albums and started teaching audio for The Australian Institute of music. Musical highlights included recording Ralph Pye Big Band and working on productions for Mother Tongues an all-female hip hop label.

2006-2008 New York City. I spend time recording Broadway cast albums in Manhattan and Indie artist in Brooklyn. Memorable sessions include: Karen O’s Native Korean Rock, Julian Verlard and Musicals Gone Missing and Legally Blonde.

Now, I offer this experience together through continued recording, production and teaching. Recent recording include Jim Moginie and the Family Dog and Frnq. Produced works include tracks for emerging bands such as Bears With Guns and for my own project Noisy Girls. Lecturing at SAE Creative Media Institute and various government funded workshops.

Disclogs were nice enough to record some of the older credits

Some newer tracks can be found on Spotify

  • Based in Church Street Studios complex in Sydney’s Inner West I have a comfortable studio space for local musicians, female and LGBTQI+ friends. Suited for voice records, overdubs and mixing the control room accommodates an upright piano, API pre-amps, and a selection of pro microphones. Great for small ensembles.

For larger band records packages can incorporate time in Church Street Studio D , the budget-friendly Bondi Pavillion Studio, or for those wishing for retro goodness Oceanic Studios

  • Since begging for a Juno 106 synth for my 16th birthday I have been fascinated by music and the technology that makes it. Hoping to make the next classic album!

“I’ve worked with Michelle engineering and producing recordings on many occasions. She finds sounds that any band wants on their recording and especially real live drums. She has wonderful ears and can pick out that pesky out of tune ring or an escaping kick drum beat immediately. And she has exquisite manners” Lindy Morrison - Musician ex Go-Betweens

"Michelle is a top notch professional with a real creative flair. She is missed here in NYC " Tim Hatfield - Producer and Owner Cowboy Technical Services - NYC

“Michelle has worked tirelessly and contributed her creative energies to help us realise our production goals. As an independent music company it was important for us to have people that understood the ever evolving industry, and do it in a down to earth manner” Steve Clisby - Artist and Producer - Sydney

"This is a panegyric to the lovely and talented Michelle Barry. We first worked together at Marcus Studios in London in 1997, and I took an instant liking to her. She's top on the gear, low key. and self effacing. She will never make a client nervous, and I always enjoy being around female energy. Studio having a regrettable tendency to be smelly boys clubs. I hire her every chance I get "Roger Greenawalt - Producer (Ben Kweller & The Pierces) Brooklyn, NYC
